Top Ten Learnings for New Consultants
Starting a career in consulting can be both exhilarating and challenging. As you embark on this journey, here are the top ten learnings that will help you succeed and thrive in your new role.

Embrace the Learning Curve

Consulting is a field that demands continuous learning. This job requires you to stay on top of your learning curve. Embrace that. In my 22 years in this job, there were times when my learning curve was steep (balancing a consulting life with a part-time MBA at Kellogg, setting up a completely new office in India, demanding client projects with all-nighters and tight timelines). And there were times when my learning curve was flat. The days of steep learning curves were tough, but they are the only times I remember. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and invest time in gaining new skills. Your growth is a journey, not a destination. Remember, if you're not growing, you're not consulting!

Develop Strong Analytical Skills

As a consultant, your ability to analyze data, identify trends, and derive actionable insights is crucial. Focus on honing your analytical skills. Learn to use analytical tools and software proficiently, and practice breaking down complex problems into manageable parts. Strong analytical skills will set you apart and make you invaluable to your clients. Let me give a simple example: In my early days, I would create data-heavy slides with minimal “takeaway” points. I was quickly coached to not do that, and I continue to coach new joiners on this. Pro tip: If your slide looks like a "Where's Waldo" page, you're doing it wrong.

Master the Art of Communication

Effective communication is at the heart of successful consulting. Whether it’s presenting findings to a client, collaborating with your team, or writing a report, clear and concise communication is key. Work on developing both your verbal and written communication skills. Practice active listening and tailor your message to suit your audience. Join Toastmasters. If you are new to the job, volunteer to speak in internal forums. I was a shy associate when I first started in this industry. I am proof that if you spend enough time on it, you can develop your communication skills! Remember, even the best analysis is worthless if you can't communicate it effectively.

Build Strong Client Relationships

Clients are the lifeblood of consulting. Building strong, trust-based relationships with your clients is essential. Always be professional, responsive, and reliable. Understand their needs and expectations and strive to exceed them. Remember, a happy client is not only a repeat client but also a source of referrals. Strive to be in a situation where most clients you have worked with will be happy to give you a referral. They want you to succeed. Think of clients as your consulting fan club – keep them happy and they'll keep cheering you on.

Be Adaptable and Flexible

The consulting landscape is ever-changing, and projects can take unexpected turns. Being adaptable and flexible will help you navigate these changes smoothly. Be open to new ideas, willing to pivot strategies, and ready to tackle new challenges. Flexibility is a key trait that will help you thrive in the dynamic consulting environment. If consulting were a sport, it would be extreme yoga – be ready to bend and stretch in unexpected ways. Just like a cricket all-rounder who can bat, bowl, and field, versatility is key.

Focus on Delivering Value

Your primary goal as a consultant is to deliver value to your clients. Understand the key drivers of their business and focus on outcomes that make a tangible difference. Be results-oriented, and always think about how your work can create the most impact. Delivering value consistently will build your reputation and ensure client satisfaction. Remember, clients aren't paying for effort; they’re paying for results. It’s like playing in the NBA – stats are great, but wins are what matter.

Time Management is Critical

Consulting often involves juggling multiple projects and tight deadlines. Effective time management is crucial to staying on top of your workload and delivering high-quality work on time. Prioritize tasks, set clear goals, and use tools and techniques to manage your time efficiently. Remember, good time management is about working smarter, not harder. If you find yourself pulling too many all-nighters, you might be doing it wrong – or you're just in your first year!

Collaborate and Leverage Team Strengths

Consulting is a team sport. Collaborate closely with your colleagues and leverage their strengths. Diverse perspectives and skills can lead to more innovative solutions. Be a team player, share knowledge, and support your teammates. Strong collaboration will lead to better outcomes for your clients and more rewarding work experience for you. Just remember, there’s no "I" in "team," but there is in "client deliverable."

Maintain a Work-Life Balance

The demands of consulting can be intense, but it’s important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Make time for activities you enjoy outside of work and set boundaries to avoid burnout. A balanced lifestyle will help you stay energized, focused, and productive in the long run. Remember, consulting is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t burn out before you reach the finish line. Think of it as training like a pro athlete – rest and recovery are just as important as the training itself.

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is essential for long-term success in consulting. Be open to learning from both successes and failures. Seek out opportunities for professional development, and continuously strive to improve. Cultivate resilience and persistence, and view challenges as opportunities for growth. A growth mindset will keep you motivated and help you achieve your full potential. Some tips that helped me along the journey: If you are doing one type of project for too long, try hard to get on a completely different type of project. This will help you learn new skills. There are so many opportunities to learn new technical skills via online courses. It can be overwhelming. Try to learn a few. Tell your manager that you are spending some time learning a new skill. Most Managers will support that. If your manager does not support it, change your manager!
In conclusion, consulting is a rewarding career that offers endless opportunities for growth and development. By embracing these top ten learnings, you will be well-equipped to navigate the challenges and excel in your role.
